Carex virgata, commonly known as swamp sedge or kuta, is a robust, moisture-loving perennial grass native to New Zealand. It features upright, bright green leaves and forms dense tufts, thriving in wet, swampy environments. This sedge is known for its hardy nature and ability to stabilize soil, making it valuable for wetland restoration and erosion control projects.

In the garden, Carex virgata is excellent for water features, bog gardens, or wetland areas, where it can create naturalistic, lush plantings. It's also suitable for planting at the edges of ponds or streams, where its roots help filter water and provide habitat for aquatic wildlife. Its upright growth and bright green colour add vertical interest and a fresh, vibrant look to the landscape.

Swamp sedge prefers full sun to partial shade and is best suited to moist or wet soil conditions, embodying its natural preference for wetlands and marshy areas. It is a resilient plant that can also tolerate periods of dryness once established, but it thrives in consistently damp environments. For impactful plantings or to establish a wetland area, spacing of about 40-50cm apart is ideal, allowing the plants to form a dense, cohesive stand.

The mature size of Carex virgata typically ranges from 60-100cm in height with a similar spread, depending on the moisture and fertility of the soil.
