Hoheria lyallii, commonly known as the mountain lacebark or mountain ribbonwood, is a deciduous tree native to New Zealand, particularly known for its attractive, serrated leaves and profuse white, star-shaped flowers. This species is part of the mallow family and is admired for its rapid growth and ability to adapt to harsh environments, often found in mountainous regions.
Mountain lacebark is an excellent choice for large gardens, parks, and restoration projects, where its ecological benefits and ornamental value are desired. It can be used as a specimen tree or in group plantings to create a natural, woodland feel. Its fast growth rate and tolerance to pruning make it suitable for screening and hedging as well.
Hoheria lyallii thrives in well-drained, moist soils and prefers a sunny to partially shaded location. It is capable of withstanding cold temperatures and exposed conditions, reflecting its mountainous origin.
Planting should account for its mature size, with potential heights reaching 10-15m and a spread of around 4-8m. This consideration ensures that the tree has enough space to grow and develop its full canopy and flowering potential.
