Hoheria populnea, commonly known as New Zealand lacebark or houhere, is an evergreen tree native to New Zealand, celebrated for its glossy, dark green leaves and profuse display of fragrant, white, star-shaped flowers in late summer and early autumn. This species is part of the mallow family and is valued for its ornamental qualities and versatility in various landscape settings.
New Zealand lacebark is suitable for a wide range of uses including as a specimen tree, in shelterbelts, or for screening, due to its dense foliage and rapid growth rate. It can also be effectively incorporated into native plantings, adding to the biodiversity and supporting local wildlife, particularly birds and insects attracted by its flowers.
Preferring a sunny to partially shaded location, Hoheria populnea thrives in well-drained, fertile soils but is adaptable to different soil types. It is relatively fast-growing and can tolerate some coastal exposure, making it a good choice for a variety of garden and landscape designs.
When planting, consider the mature size of the tree, which can reach heights of 6-10m and a spread of 3-5m. Adequate spacing will allow the tree to develop fully, showcasing its graceful form and abundant flowering.
