Juncus sarophorus, commonly known as broom rush or sharp rush, is a perennial, grass-like plant native to wetlands and marshes in New Zealand. It features upright, cylindrical, green stems and a distinctive, sharp-pointed appearance, with brownish inflorescences that bloom in summer, adding textural interest.
In the garden, Juncus sarophorus is particularly suited for water gardens, pond edges, and wetland plantings, where it can contribute to natural filtration and habitat creation. It's also useful for erosion control in damp areas, thanks to its robust root system and preference for wet conditions. Broom rush can add architectural interest to the landscape, with its vertical form and unique texture.
Broom rush thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers consistently moist to wet soil conditions, embodying its natural habitat preferences. It is ideal for planting in bog gardens, around water features, or in areas that are naturally damp. For planting, a spacing of about 30-50cm apart is recommended to allow each plant to establish and form a dense, effective ground cover.
The mature size of Juncus sarophorus typically ranges from 60-90cm in height, with a spread of around 30-50cm.
