Laurus nobilis, commonly known as bay laurel or sweet bay, is an aromatic, evergreen tree or shrub well-regarded for its glossy, dark green leaves, which are widely used as a culinary herb. The plant can produce small, yellow flowers in the spring, followed by dark berries, but it is primarily cultivated for its fragrant foliage.

In the garden, Laurus nobilis is versatile and can be grown as a standalone specimen, in hedging, or as part of a mixed border. It is particularly valued in kitchen or herb gardens, where leaves can be harvested fresh or dried for culinary use. Bay laurel can also be shaped into topiary forms, making it a popular choice for formal garden designs or as a potted feature on patios and balconies.

Bay laurel prefers full sun to partial shade and thrives in well-drained, fertile soil. It is relatively drought-tolerant once established and can cope with a range of soil types, though it does not like to be waterlogged. For hedging, plants should be spaced about 60-90cm apart to allow for growth and to ensure a dense, leafy hedge. The mature size of Laurus nobilis can vary, with the tree capable of reaching up to 10-15m in height if left unpruned, but it can be maintained at a much smaller size with regular pruning.
