Leptinella dioica, commonly known as double button or New Zealand brass buttons, is a hardy, low-growing perennial ground cover native to New Zealand. This plant is distinguished by its fine, feathery foliage and tiny, button-like, greenish-yellow flowers that bloom in spring and early summer, giving it a delicate, textured appearance.

In the garden, Leptinella dioica is perfect for creating a soft, moss-like carpet in shady areas, between paving stones, or in rock gardens. Its dense, mat-forming habit makes it an excellent choice for areas where low maintenance and ground coverage are desired. It is particularly well-suited to fairy or miniature gardens, woodland settings, or as a lawn alternative in small, lightly trafficked areas.

Leptinella dioica thrives in moist, well-drained soil and prefers partial shade, though it can tolerate full sun in cooler climates. Its preference for cooler, shaded areas makes it a great option for underplanting or filling gaps in shaded garden beds.

For effective ground coverage, plants should be spaced around 15-20 cm apart. This allows the plant to quickly form a continuous mat, suppressing weeds and creating a cohesive look. The mature size of Leptinella dioica is quite modest, typically reaching only a few centimetres in height but spreading out to 20-30cm in width.
