Muehlenbeckia complexa, commonly known as wire vine or pohuehue, is a vigorous, semi-evergreen climber or ground cover plant native to New Zealand. It is known for its wiry, interlacing stems and small, round, dark green leaves. This plant can produce tiny, white or greenish-white flowers in summer, followed by small, white or translucent berries that are attractive to birds.

In the garden, Muehlenbeckia complexa is highly versatile and can be used as a ground cover, for covering walls or trellises, or as a dense, scrambling shrub. It's particularly effective in coastal gardens due to its salt tolerance and can be used to stabilize banks or as part of mixed plantings to provide contrast with its delicate foliage against larger-leaved plants.

Muehlenbeckia complexa prefers full sun to partial shade and well-drained soil but can tolerate a range of conditions, including sandy and rocky soils. It is resilient and can withstand coastal winds, making it suitable for challenging garden environments. When planting for ground cover or dense coverage, spacing should be around 30-50 cm apart, allowing the plants to intertwine and form a thick mat.

The mature size of Muehlenbeckia complexa can be quite variable, depending on whether it is grown as a climber or ground cover. As a climbing vine, it can reach heights of up to 5m, while as a ground cover, it typically stays much lower, around 30-50cm in height, but can spread widely across the ground.
