Ophiopogon planiscapus, a unique green variety of black mondo grass, is a perennial that forms lush, dense tufts of arching, dark green leaves. This particular species is usually recognised for its black or very dark purple foliage.

In the garden, it serves as an excellent ground cover, border edging, or accent in rock gardens and shaded areas, where its deep green, grass-like leaves create a striking contrast against lighter, brighter plants. It blooms with small, inconspicuous flowers in the summer, sometimes followed by dark berries.

Preferring partial shade and well-drained, fertile soil, it's drought-tolerant once established and requires minimal care. Plants should be spaced about 15-20cm apart for a dense ground cover effect.

Typically, Ophiopogon planiscapus reaches around 20-30cm in height and width.

Pest Control: This plant is generally pest-resistant. However, watch for slugs and snails, which can damage the foliage. Use organic slug pellets or traps to manage these pests.

Disease Management: Ophiopogon planiscapus is typically disease-free. Ensure good air circulation and proper soil drainage to prevent any potential fungal diseases. If root rot is suspected, improve drainage and reduce watering.
