Viburnum tinus Eve Price is a popular evergreen flowering shrub, often grown for its dense, compact growth and profuse, long-lasting flowers. The plant has attractive dark-green foliage that remains throughout the year. From late winter to early spring, it produces clusters of pink buds that open into delicate, star-shaped white flowers with a slight fragrance. Following flowering, the plant often produces ornamental blue-black berries. This hardy plant is tolerant of many conditions, including frost and is versatile enough to be grown in full sun to partial shade in a range of soil types. It can be used for hedging, as a stand-alone shrub or in mixed borders and is also suitable for container planting. It can reach a height and spread of 2-3m.
Trimming: Prune immediately after flowering to maintain a tidy, well-shaped shrub and encourage vigorous new growth. Remove any dead, damaged, or crossing branches, and lightly thin older stems if the plant becomes congested.
Deadheading: Deadheading is not essential, but removing spent flower clusters can improve the shrub's appearance and encourage energy to be directed into healthy growth.
Fertilising: Apply a balanced slow-release fertiliser in early spring. An annual mulch of compost or well-rotted organic matter will help retain moisture and improve soil fertility.
Watering: Water regularly during the first one to two years while the shrub establishes. Once established, it is reasonably drought tolerant but benefits from deep watering during extended dry periods, particularly in summer.
Pest Control: Generally trouble-free, though aphids, scale insects, and viburnum beetle (where present) may occasionally affect the foliage. Check leaves regularly for damage or infestations and treat with insecticidal soap, horticultural oil, or an appropriate insecticide if required.
Disease Management: Watch for powdery mildew, leaf spot, and root rot in poorly drained soils. Signs include white powdery growth, brown or black leaf spots, yellowing foliage, or wilting. Improve air circulation, avoid overhead watering, ensure good drainage, remove affected foliage, and apply a suitable fungicide if necessary.
