Vireya Little Devil

Vireya 'Little Devil' is a compact, evergreen rhododendron known for its fiery red-orange, trumpet-shaped flowers that appear in clusters from spring through to autumn. The vibrant blooms contrast beautifully with its glossy green foliage, adding a tropical touch to shaded borders, containers, or sheltered courtyards. With a tidy, rounded habit reaching approximately 80-100 cm high and wide, it suits subtropical, woodland, and contemporary garden styles.

Plant in partial shade with free-draining, acidic, humus-rich soil. Space plants 60-80 cm apart to allow for airflow and mature spread. Protect from frost and drying winds. Water consistently during dry spells and mulch annually to retain moisture and improve soil structure. Lightly prune after flowering to maintain shape and promote further growth. A colourful, low-maintenance choice for compact spaces and containers.

Fertilising: Feed every 4-6 weeks during the growing season with a fertiliser for acid-loving plants. Use a balanced or high-potassium formula to support flowering and healthy growth. Avoid high-nitrogen fertilisers, which can reduce flowering.

Watering: Water regularly, especially during dry periods and while establishing. Vireya ‘Little Devil’ prefers moist, free-draining, acidic soil-avoid waterlogging and dry-out. Mulch with pine bark or leaf litter to retain moisture and maintain soil acidity.

Pest Control: Monitor for aphids, thrips, and scale insects. Treat infestations early with insecticidal soap or neem oil.

Disease Management: Ensure good air circulation and avoid overhead watering to reduce the risk of fungal issues such as root rot or botrytis. Remove any diseased or yellowing leaves promptly. Plant in a well-drained mix, especially if growing in containers.
